SEO is tough! When it comes to ranking high on Google for keywords you need, it’s hard to know where to even start. So I’m starting a series of experiments to see if I can get to the first page of Google for the search term “SEO Kent”. It’s fairly broad but it’s location specific. I’m going to try a number of different techniques to get there.
- I’m going to write 5 blog posts specifically on that subject, doing keyword research to see what people are searching on SEO.
- Adding valuable backlinks to our website, once I have written these blog posts I’m going to try and place the backlinks strategically.
- Wait, I need to see how long it takes to get to the top
Technically you could count this blog post as the first of the blog posts but I won’t, this is more for my own records and anyone that’s interested.
Where do we rank now for SEO Kent?
Currently we aren’t getting much traffic for the search term SEO Kent, ranking around possition 60 which is basically unreachable to anyone trying to find us! We do get a few clicks here and there but I want that go up massively.
What search terms are people using to find us?
We are getting a good number of Impressions on the search term “seo Kent” but it’s only resulting in 1 click in the past 3 months! We haven’t actually been pushing these keywords as other work as taken over but I think if we was to invest time and effort into getting high on Google for these search terms it will be unbelievably good for the business.
The search term “SEO rocket” was probably a one off fluke when someone was trying to find another business with a similar name.
The rest are very valuable information search terms “SEO company Kent”, “Kent seo”, “seo in Kent” are all getting impressions, we just need to use these search terms in various blog posts to tell Google rank us higher for these search terms.
Keyword research – how we do it
When trying to rank for the search term “seo Kent” a good place to start is simply Googling that and see who’s on top right now (soon to be us). Looking past the ads that come up there are number of websites with the domain name like “seokent” so they’ll probably get the top ranking mainly from that. The top business has a pretty outdated website that looks like it could do with a redesign. This is good opportunity for us because we could make a better looking web page that uses the same or similar wording on the website.
Running the website through SEMRush
This is a great way of seeing what keywords they are ranking for as well as backlinks etc. We can see from the images below that they get a decent amount of website traffic and they have a lot of backlinks, this is what we need! They are also number one on Google for various search terms like “seo agency Kent”, “seo company Kent” etc. I think the key take away here is backlinks!
Using Answer the Public to get an idea of what people are searching
Answer the Public allows you to search for a keyword, like “seo Kent” and it will output data on what people are searching based on that keyword. It’s great for understanding what information people are looking for. We are going to use this information to figure out what blog posts we are going to write about.
We can see from the data below some questions people are asking, we are only using the free version so we get limited data. But it’s still useful, we can see the the question “are seo services worth it”, it gets a fairly low search volume, but it might be good to target for those exact reasons. It’ll be easy to rank high for that search term.
Where to go from here | Ranking high for SEO Kent
So where are we going to go from here? We are going to start in making some really good content for the search term “seo Kent”. These blog posts will be super useful for anyone reading, with lots of keywords and search turns that are linked to SEO Kent. Doing everything possible including creating lots of backlinks for the blog posts, optimising it for readability, adding the correct headings, meta descriptions and other stuff.
