Freelancing seems to have this whole stigma around it, that its what people do because they can’t get a real job. But that isn’t the case at all. If you’re a Freelancer, you’ll know how hard it can be and how much time and effort is required in order to make a living. There is never a guarantee of stable income like a “real” job. However I’m here to help you to understand why us Freelancers do what we do, and how it can actually be more beneficial. Especially as times are changing and technology is taking over.
Lower Costs
Working in an office/under a company has its expenses. Utility, insurance, equipment, paying their employees. If the profit isn’t sufficient, jobs can fail. Freelancers, however, do not have to worry about these costs. Starting up as a Freelancer and finding clients is completely free. Websites such as Fiverr, PeopleperHour and Upwork are all free places to find your work.
FREEDOM!!
One of the biggest reasons of all. Freedom. As a Freelancer, you are your own boss. Now, yes this can prove a challenge to yourself, as you are your biggest ally. No one is telling you when to start work and what to do, that’s all down to you. But that’s the beauty of it. Working Freelance, you can choose your own working hours and choose who you work with. Don’t get me wrong- if you want to be successful, you do have to be willing to put the hours in. But you can do it all from the comfort of your own home! I’m working from my bed today, its amazing.
More Work Opportunities
As a Freelancer, you will find yourself working for many different people from different locations. It’s an amazing way to adapt your skills and learn new things everyday. Unlike working for one particular business, there are unlimited ways for you to grow and improve. Every day is different, so it’s a lot harder to get bored.
Choosing your Work
Leading on from the Freedom of the job, this means you are able to choose who you work with. You don’t have to work with anyone that you don’t want to, Unlike at an “office job” if you will, you can choose who you want to surround yourself with. If you don’t feel like a potential client is going to be a joy to work with, you don’t have to work with them. It’s all down to you!
Your Earning Potential is Unlimited!
When you first start out, you’ll probably take any work you can get- compltely understandable we’ve all done it. However when you start to grow and build your business, you’ll find yourself having more clients to choose from, as well as being able to choose your rates. Traditionally, Freelancers get paid much higher rates. This is because they have to pay for all of their own expenses, equipment, holiday pay etc.
Your Earnings are Yours
A usual employee will be paid a set salary, yes they may be paid bonuses every once in a while. But all in all they have a set income, no matter whether you work harder one day. However, as a Freelancer you are paid for your efforts, The more they work, the more they get paid. All the work that you do as a Freelancer is only benefiting you, not any other employees or your boss, who may take a big ol’ cut of the companies income. All the money you earn is completely yours to keep.
You’ll Gain Confidence
Working for yourself can be very daunting. Starting out you may find yourself doubting your abilities, Don’t let the self-doubt take over. You’ll find that your whole world is different when you’re your own boss. You’ll find that your confidence grows as you start to communicate with clients and other business owners. You become a totally new, confident person as a Freelancer.
You’re working a job you love!
If someone’s going into Freelancing, more often than not they are doing it for something they enjoy. Whether that be Graphic Design, a Photographer, Writer. Freelancing gives you a sense of pride in a job well done. Seeing clients overjoyed with the work you’ve created, something you love doing anyway, is an amazing feeling. As they say, choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day if your life.
There are so many more positives to going into Freelance, so a Part 2 of this is definitely needed. However I hope this helps you if you are debating whether to go Freelance. As long as you’re willing to put the effort it, amazing things can come from it.
